How to Prevent Scarring After Cosmetic Surgery

Let's talk about cosmetic surgery. You finally took the plunge and got that procedure you've been wanting forever.

The surgery went smoothly, the results look amazing so far, and now you're starting the recovery process.

There's just one thing—you want to avoid scarring as much as possible. Even the most skilled surgeon can't prevent scars completely, but there are proven ways to minimize them.

I'm Jazzie, a Paramedical Scar Specialist at Amor Propio Aesthetic Surgery Center in Dallas. And I'm sharing all my best tips today to help you heal beautifully!

#1 Be Diligent with Moisturizing

As soon as those bandages come off, it's moisturizing time! Keeping your skin hydrated is one of the most important steps for reducing scars. Dry skin can't renew itself as quickly, which leads to more prominent scarring.

Think of moisturizer as nourishment for your healing skin. It provides hydration to help new tissue form evenly with minimal marking. Studies actually show that diligent moisturizing after surgery can decrease scar severity by up to 50%.

What moisturizer is best?

Fragrance-free lotions and ointments like petroleum jelly are ideal. Apply a generous layer and massage in gently multiple times per day, especially after washing. This gives your skin the moisture it craves to heal with less scarring.

#2 Guard Against Sun Exposure

Here's a fact—sun exposure can worsen scarring, sometimes permanently. UV rays stimulate melanin production, which darkens scar tissue. Not what we want!

So be diligent with sun protection while scars heal. Wear sunscreen daily with SPF 30 or higher, reapplying often. Cover up with lightweight scarves and wide-brimmed hats.

Limit direct sunlight as much as you can until scars have fully faded. I know, not as fun as sunbathing all day! But protecting those scars now prevents visible damage later.

#3 Follow Your Surgeon's Wound Care Advice

This step is simple but essential—follow your surgeon's instructions! They'll advise you on incision care, dressing changes, and watching for complications.

Usually this involves gently cleaning the area daily with mild soap and water. Pat dry and apply antibiotic ointment if recommended. Always cover with a fresh, sterile bandage. Be extremely gentle with fragile healing skin.

Follow directions on changing dressings regularly. Watch for concerning symptoms like worsening pain, redness, swelling, drainage or fever. Report any issues to your surgeon right away! Proper wound care prevents infection and minimizes scarring.

#4 Avoid Putting Stress on Incisions

It's tempting to dive back into normal activity, but hold off! Any tension or friction on healing incisions can widen scars.

Avoid tight clothing, modify how you carry bags, and adjust sleeping positions. Don't lift anything strenuous or exercise rigorously for at least a few weeks post-surgery. Give your body ample time to fully close incisions before adding stress.

Patience now allows scars to heal optimally long-term. I know slowing down is boring, but it's worth it!

#5 Ask About Silicone Scar Treatments

The research shows silicone sheets and gels can dramatically reduce scarring—like 70% improvement! Silicone hydrates and applies gentle pressure to flatten and smooth tissue.

Sheets are worn 12+ hours daily for several months over closed incisions.

This helps realign collagen for flatter, more even scars. Gels are massaged in a few times daily to soften scars and reduce redness. Discuss integrating silicone with your surgeon once drainage has stopped.

#6 Be Patient

Healing takes time.

Remember that scars often continue improving for 6 months to 2 years after surgery.

Follow all scar care diligently, but don't worry if fading seems slow. With gentle, consistent moisture and protection, scars get flatter and paler daily.

It's normal to feel impatient about final results. But appreciate how far you've come already! Scars mean you courageously got the cosmetic change you wanted. Now let's ensure they heal softly.

See Your Surgeon if You Notice:

  • Increased redness, swelling, oozing, warmth or tenderness - may indicate infection

  • Bleeding that persists after light pressure

  • Worsening tightness, hardness or pain - could signal excessive scarring

  • Unclosed incisions several weeks post-surgery

  • Dark or raised scars 6+ months after following scar care

Some discomfort and bruising is normal initially. But significant changes in pain or complications warrant prompt surgeon follow-up. They can assess and modify treatment to get scars back on track.
